Sleep Awareness
IISS helps in creating general awareness about sleep disorders to general public as well as targeted population. Awareness programmes will include the following
- Complete registration
- Supplying information about sleep disorders using pamplets, posters, lectures
- Conducting physical examination of the participants including height,weight, neck circumference , swelling in either or both the legs , problems with pharyngeal opening
- Using oximetry
- Conducting a neuropsychology test for assessment of sleep deprived patients

What is sleep?
Condition of body and mind which typically recurs for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is inactive, the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed, and consciousness practically suspended (Oxford dictionary)
Disorder: that produce either difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep or excessive sleepiness
These are are a few sleep disorders :
Insomnia is repeated difficulty with sleep initiation, Duration, Consolidation, Sleep quality-despite adequate time & opportunity. Insomnia has different types like adjustment insomnia.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
It is one of the Most common sleep disorder affecting7.5% in Men & 4.5 % in women.
OSA causes complete cessation of airflow for 10 seconds with continued respiratory effort which leads to Hypopnea, which leads to various variety of signs and symptoms like O2 desaturation, Body jerks, Limb movements, Snores, Arousals. OSA Can contribute to various dreadful disorders like Hypertension, Heart disease, Stroke, Depression, Excessive Daytime Sleepiness(EDS)
Hypersomnia
Hypersomnia, or excessive sleepiness, is a condition in which a person has trouble staying awake during the day. People who have hypersomnia can fall asleep at any time; for instance, at work or while they are driving.
Parasomnias
Unwanted Physical movement or action occurring during sleep. It includes confusional arousals, sleep walking, sleep tremor, REM related sleep behavior, Nightmare disorder, hallucintions, parasomnia due to medical conditions or due to drug addictions.
Sleep related Movement Disorders
Simple, often repetitive movements during sleep. It includes Restless leg syndrome,periodic limb movement, leg cramps, bruxism, rythmic movement disorder
Other sleep disorders include :
People who are short sleeper, long sleeper, snoring, sleep starts, hypnic jerks, etc
