SLEEP AND HEART

There is an increase risk of sudden cardiac death in first several hours POST WAKE UP?

Among many sleep disorders, the most commonly found is the OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA). OSA is a disorder of abnormal breathing during sleep and people with OSA have repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep, caused by the main breathing passage in the back of the throat closing/becoming too narrow.

OSA has direct link with hypertension and direct and indirect link with CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE (CAD), CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE (CHF) and stroke.

OSA and Hypertension –is due to repeated pressure on heart and increases BP as a consequence. Multiple sleep and wake cycle put pressure on heart and it remains high, After some time, even during daytime. This leads to chronic high BP i.e. Hypertension

OSA AND CAD – OSA increases the risk for Hypertension that, in turn, is a known cause for CAD.

The respiratory event during the night puts excessive stress on the heart and can worsen existing disease.

Due to narrow arteries in CAD, the blood flow is limited; people with OSA, the blood oxygen level drops, oxygen demand increases and heart is even more stressed.

When OSA is treated the blood oxygen level is maintained; the oxygen demand is put in control and the heart is considerably less stressed and thus deaths due to CAD IS reduced.

CHF, this condition occurs when the heart is damaged so much that its blood pumping capacity is severely compromised, if not stopped.

CHF people have another sleep breathe related problem which is Central Sleep Apnea. Unlike OSA the breathing passage remains open; there is no effort on breathing from the sufferer. This results in awakenings and increase in heart  rate and BP that worsen the heart failure in turn leading to more CSA. The vicious cycle continues which decreases heart functioning. Treatment of CSA can improve heart function as well as improve sleep quality.

In a nutshell heart diseases or failures result in short breath that in turn culminates into disturbs sleep. On a very positive note good sleep keeps heart healthy and among many other precautions or controlling measure, and important is to have good quality sleep
